Why building sites need security
Construction sites hold valuable materials, tools and machinery, often in temporary compounds behind hoarding. Theft and vandalism can delay a programme by weeks, and trespassers, including children, can be seriously hurt on an open site. Site security also helps principal contractors meet their duty under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 to prevent unauthorised access.
What our site officers do
- Run the gatehouse, checking that everyone on site is inducted and signed in.
- Control deliveries and vehicles in and out, logging plates and loads.
- Patrol the hoarding, compounds, welfare cabins and plant at night and weekends.
- Check that plant is immobilised, containers locked and fuel stores secure.
- Respond to alarms and intruders, and call the police where needed.
- Record everything in a daily log you can share with the site manager.
Static guard, patrols or a mix?
| Option | Best for | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| 24/7 static guards | Large or high-value sites | Officers on site at all times, including a manned gatehouse |
| Night and weekend guards | Most active sites | Cover when the workforce has gone home |
| Mobile patrols | Smaller or dormant sites | Random visits and lock-up checks; see mobile patrols |
| Guards plus CCTV | Sites with towers or cameras | Officers respond to camera alerts; see CCTV monitoring |
Through every stage of the build
Security needs change as a project moves from groundworks to fit-out. Early on, plant and fuel are the main targets. Later, copper cable, boilers, kitchens and finished interiors become valuable. We review the plan with your site manager at each stage so cover stays matched to the risk.

| Factor | Why it matters | What to ask us |
|---|---|---|
| Hours of cover | 24/7 costs more than nights and weekends | When is our site most at risk? |
| Site size and entrances | More gates and perimeter need more officers | How many guards does our site need? |
| Welfare for officers | Guards need a cabin, toilet and power | What welfare do you need on site? |
| Contract length | Long builds are planned as rolling contracts | Can we scale cover up and down by phase? |
Construction Site Security FAQs
